An Introduction to Russell Island
Russell Island is nestled amongst the Bay Islands and is located 39 kilometres from the heart of Brisbane CBD, the capital city of Queensland, Australia. Russell Island is closest to the mainland; other islands within the group include Macleay, Lamb, Karragarra & Southern Moreton Bay. Russell Island is the business hub of the islands and has most services of a normal suburb/township: churches, mains water, electricity, telephone, internet (including broadband), new supermarket, chemist, doctors, schools, parks, swimming pool, library, clubs (courtesy bus) as well as the usual emergency services, Police, Ambulance (water & helicopter) & Fire Brigade.

There are also various community groups active on the Island as well as community activities in the Community Hall.

Transportation includes water taxi, ferries & barges; the ferry is a 20 minute ride.

Island services are expanding all the time. A new substation for electricity has just been completed as well as expansion of schools, new shops and plans for 2 resorts which will eventually include direct water transport to Brisbane City.

The Island is 8 kilometres long and population is approximately 5,000. Russell Island has recently become a favourite of younger families looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of the mainland as the Island is perfect for activities such as fishing etc and children can have room to run around and play without having to worry about busy roads. Russell Island is also a perfect place to retire due to the sub tropical climate which makes for great gardening. The fishing is pretty good too!
